Getting to Know Donald Sutherland

No matter how old he DONALDgets and how grumpy his characters are on the screen, Donald Sutherland always seems to have a twinkle in his eye that has made him quite a hit with the ladies over the years. The actor’s wit and sharp shooting has also made him an icon among men over the world. Here are some of the things that make Donald Sutherland so awesome:

  • Donald Sutherland was a radio DJ entertaining audiences with his wit before he turned 14.
  • He is the father of prolific actor Kiefer Sutherland as well as Rachel Sutherland.
  • Although Donald Sutherland had appeared on television and radio many times previously, his career skyrocketed in 1970 when he stepped onto the small screen playing a role in the war sitcom M.A.S.H.
  • In the 1992 movie Article 99, Kiefer Sutherland plays a tribute to his father’s character in M.A.S.H by wearing the same trademark fishing bucket hat and glasses.
  • Donald Sutherland played Homer Simpson in 1975 in the hit movie the Day of the Locust and in 1989 has a guest appearance on The Simpsons.
  • Sutherland is very tall and usually has to slouch slightly on camera so that he can come face to face with other actors.
  • In addition to starring with Alan Alda in M.A.S.H. Kiefer Sutherland also starred with Alda in the movie Six Degrees of Separation in 1993.
  • Donald Sutherland nearly died from meningitis in 1979.
  • Sutherland shared the screen with his son Kiefer Sutherland in two movies, namely Max Dugan Returns in 1983 and A Time to Kill in 1996 and in the latter movie he and his son were cast as shown enemies.
  • Sutherland excelled as the sadistic and perverse fascist leader in the movie 1900 that was released in 1976. However, he played the role too well for his own liking and wasn’t able to watch his performance for many years.
